Operation Civic Engagement

Kris Steele, former Oklahoma House Speaker and current Executive Director of TEEM.

At this event we will be acknowledging the importance of developing engaged citizens through Oklahoma classrooms.  We will also be recognizing teachers, students and key individuals from organizations that supported Newspapers in Education during the 2017-2018 school year.  This event is a fundraiser to raise funds for the upcoming 2018-2019 school year. Through this event we will be recognizing teachers, students and key individuals from various organizations, including the 2018 Teacher of the Year and the 2018 BLUE Award Winner.   Those in attendance will also hear from a special guest that can speak to this year’s theme: Civic Literacy and Civic Engagement. Our keynote speaker for this year’s event is Kris Steele, Executive Director of TEEM and former Oklahoma Speaker of the House.

This event is raising money to support Newspapers in Education’s program offerings through The Oklahoman.  NIE provides resources to nearly 30% of the total statewide student population by servicing over 195,000 Oklahoma students. According to the Oklahoma State Department of Education, 66% of the schools being served by our Newspapers in Education program are schools in which 50% or more of the student body participated in the Free Lunch program during the 2016 – 2017 school year.
